INSPIRED IN PART BY THE MOVIE "0 BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?"
THE LEGEND OF TOMMY JOHNSON One Sunday afternoon during the summer of 1991 I was driving up Highway 61 on my way home to Cambridge, Massachusetts from a trip to the delta. It was a pilgrimage of sorts that I had planned ever since I was a freshman in college. Around 1986, a classmate of mine had turned me onto a record by an obscure bluesman by the name of Tommy Johnson. It was the only known recording of him at that time. He told me that legend has it that Tommy had sold his soul to the devil somewhere in the Mississippi delta for his talent.
What I heard on that record was so different from anything else I knew it could have come from Mars. I was amazed to learn that the song was recorded over 50 years ago. The experience changed my life forever. From that moment on I have been seeking as much as I could about the life of the man and what inspired such haunting music. Right then and there I knew I would have to take a journey to this place called the delta. The song was titled "0 Brother, Where Art Thou?". . . .
