All the traditional characters of the Nativity are present, with angels, shepherds and Wise Men all being haloed by imitations of bagpipes and other pastoral instruments - the traditional sounds of Christmas music.   Italian baroque music remains theatrical even when it was composed for the church, as can be heard in these pieces that narrate the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Lullaby of the Virgin, in this last-named the horrors of the Passion to come weigh heavily on Mary as she sings her child to sleep.   These 'sacred tales' are accompanied by instrumental pieces, amongst which we can find the first Pastoral sonatas of the Italian Baroque.
