ROMANESQUE
Kathelijne VAN LAETHEM, soprano / Sophie WATILLON, violes de gambe / Piet STRYCKERS, basse de viole, cistre / Liam FENNELY, basse de viole / Hannelore DEVAERE, harpe / Bart COEN, flûtes a bec / direction Philippe MALFEYT, luth, cistre, tympanon / avec la participation de Stephan MacLEOD, basse

A native of Ghent, Alexander Utendal was in service to Marie of Hungary, Regent of the Low Countries, before joining the chapel ot Archduke Ferdinand of Prague and Innsbruck.   The collection published in Nuremberg in 1574 contains French songs that employ texts of extremely high quality, a good number of them being set to poems by Ronsard.   The 'Teutsche Lieder', however, provide a contrast to the other works on this recording, being lighter in character and often even saucy and lewd.
