Michael PRAETORIUS
Terpsichore Musarum (1612)

LA BANDE DES VIOLONS DU RICERCAR CONSORT (Francois Fernandez)
RICERCAR CONSORT (Philippe Pierlot)
LA FENICE (Jean Tubéry)
LA BANDÉ DES LUTHS (Philippe Malfeyt)

Michael Praetorius' volume of dances Terpsichore is the largest collection in existence of the dances of the French Ballets de Cour that were current at the beginning of the 17th century.   It resulted from the collaboration between Praetorius, a French dancing master, and Francisque Caroubel, one of the violinists of the Bande des XXIV violons du Roi.   The suites performed here present these dances in four different instrumentations as well as the Bande des Violons that is usual for this repertoire, there is also an ensemble of wind instruments, a consort of viols and the more unusual timbre of a 'band of lutes'.
