The 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment band has become one of Victoria's premier military bands and can label itself a truly Melbourne band, drawn from its humble beginnings to the Port Melbourne City Brass Band.
It was 1958 and the 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment recruited the financially troubled Port Melbourne Band to add a touch of extra atmosphere to ceremonial parades, as well as providing music once a month to regimental parade nights.
The band's dress was decided on barathea blues and were allowed to fulfill a dual role as both a military and municipal band, to fulfill Port Melbourne council engagements.
This arrangement lasted till 1960, where an increasing demand by military units and community groups for the 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment band, forced the band to forgo fully its Port Melbourne commitments and become a fully fledged part of 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment.
Since then the band has increased in stature, with frequent features throughout its history at major sporting and public events, including football finals and major horse racing meetings, as well as becoming in high demand among military circles.
1982 saw a number of changes to the band, a new bandmaster, the recruitment of the first woman in the band and the change from a brass band to concert band.
A major highlight for the band was performing at the premier of the movie the Lighthorsemen, a movie that portrays a significant part of history for the regiment, as well has having the odd band member as an extra!
1999 saw the band move into its current home in Simpson Barracks Watsonia after a short stint in the Defence Force School of Music.
The current Band Master is WO1 Gary Nicholls and under his leadership the band is proud to continue its long-standing commitment to musical and military excellence in its service to the nation.
Produced and Engineered by John Andrews and Bruce Simpson
