Established in 1984 by Artistic Director Bernard Labadie, the Québec City-based fifteen-member ensemble, Les Violons du Roy, has grown to be recognized internationally as one of today's finest chamber orchestras - a group that always delivers performances of great beauty, freshness and energy. While their interpretations of Baroque and Classical repertoire demonstrate a deep understanding of historically informed performance practice, they achieve an entirely distinctive sound by performing Baroque music on modern instruments, using Baroque period bows. Their recording of G. F. Handel: "Apollo e Dafne" & "Silete venti" [xCD-90288] won a 2000 Juno Award, in the category of Best Classical Album: Vocal or Choral Performance. Like The Well-Tempered Clavier and The Musical Offering, Art of the Fugue is a collection of profoundly expressive pieces, characteristic of Bach's boundless imagination and unequalled mastery of counterpoint. These fugues are often dramatically charged pieces, highly original and individual in form. One might choose to indulge in a few selections at a time, or to hear Art of the Fugue as an integral work. Either way, Bernard Labadie's arrangement reveals not only the structural ingenuity of this music, but also its passion and color. A particular highlight of this version is Labadie's seamless completion of the final fugue, which was alleged to have been composed by Bach as he lay dying.
