During the 18th century, Scotland enjoyed an unprecedented period of intense musical creativity and growth. Probably the most unique and enduring musical result of this burst of activity was the melding of Italian art music with the folk song and fiddle music of Scotland. This seemingly unlikely musical marriage can be attributed to a number of factors, both political and musical in their origins.
