Gerber's career has had an unusual trajectory. He was first known mainly in new music circles in New York City and then began touring the former Soviet Union in 1990. He became perhaps the most frequently performed American composer there for many years with dozens of concerts of his orchestral and chamber works Gerber was born in Washington, D.C. in 1948 and now lives in New York City. He received degrees from Haverford College and Princeton University, which awarded him a 4-year fellowship for graduate studies. His composition teachers included Robert Parris, Earl Kim, J.K. Randall, and Milton Babbitt. His large catalogue of works includes many songs, choral works, and piano pieces, and he also performs occasionally as a pianist, mostly in his own works.
