The Empyrean Ensemble, founded in 1988 by composer Ross Bauer, represents the best in professional chamber music performance of contemporary music.   In residency at the University of California Davis, the ensemble is co-directed by composers Yu-Hui Chang and Laurie San Martin.   The Empyrean consists of a core of five of California's finest musicians, known for their powerful performance delivery and championship of contemporary compositions: Terrie Baune (violin), Tod Brody (flute), Peter Josheff (clarinet), Thalia Moore (cello), and Ellen Ruth Rose (viola).   Through compelling performances of the best new American music, in addition to twentieth-century classics, the ensemble offers audiences the opportunity to hear music reflecting contemporary times.   It engenders the creation of new works written by renowned and emerging composers alike, with its premiering, commissioning, and recording efforts.
